List 1: Party Moments

Hand these out around 10 pm. Each player marks a square the moment it happens, and the first line wins a small prize. Then keep playing for a blackout: the last few squares tend to land in the final minutes before midnight, which makes the countdown even louder.

  • Someone checks the time
  • Party hats go on
  • Noisemakers come out
  • A countdown starts too early
  • A group selfie
  • Fireworks, seen or heard
  • New Year's coverage on TV
  • Someone shares a resolution
  • "This year went so fast"
  • Confetti on the floor
  • A toast to the year
  • Someone dozes off before midnight
  • Nobody knows the words to Auld Lang Syne
  • A phone battery dies
  • A midnight kiss or hug
  • A call to another time zone
  • A song from this year plays
  • Someone dances
  • A favorite moment of the year
  • Glitter on someone's face
  • A sparkly outfit
  • Karaoke breaks out
  • A text arrives at midnight
  • A board game comes out
  • Someone makes a wish at midnight
  • Plans for January
  • Someone films the countdown
  • A party popper pops
  • A game of charades
  • A yawn before 11 pm
  • A balloon pops
  • Leftover holiday treats
  • Sparkling juice for the kids
  • "New year, new me"

The blackout round: announce at 11:30 that the next bingo has to be a full card. It keeps everyone watching the room right up to the countdown.

List 2: Early Countdown for Kids

Plenty of families celebrate at 7 or 8 pm, often timed to midnight somewhere further east, and call it a night. These 30 easy words work as a caller game while the kids wait, and nearly all of them are things they'll actually see at the party.

Little ones do better on a 3×3 or 4×4 grid: it fills faster, and the same 30 words still work.

List 3: 2027 Goals Card

This one isn't for the party at all. Set the card count to one, make a goals card just for you, and stick it on the fridge. Mark a square each time you do the thing. A line by spring is a good year; a blackout by December is a great one.

Make one for each person in the family, or swap in your own goals before you print. The free space can say whatever you like: try your word for the year.

How to Run It

Calling the kids' list

Paste the 30 words into a document, print the page, and snip it into slips to draw from a party hat. Read each one aloud and keep the drawn slips in order so you can check a winning card.

Prizes

Noisemakers, a glow stick, first pick of the snack table, or the job of leading the countdown.

Printing and phones

Landscape fits two cards on a page with a cut line. To skip printing, use Share Online: every guest opens their own card on their phone, and a pen and a napkin handle the marking. Designing and printing cost nothing; free downloads include a small demo watermark, which a pass removes.

Running jokes from this year belong on the card: type them into the party list before you print.

A Music Round for Midnight

If your party leans musical, Fat City Entertainment (our sister company) makes music bingo games where players mark songs instead of words. The Year Was... music bingo is a five-game pack built on the top hits of five single years, a natural fit for a night about looking back.
